We are going home

As part of the project created in the frame of the Istamnul Artist Residency, I continue to develop practices related to the phenomenology of collective and individual memory. After the full-scale russian attack in Ukraine, the concept on which I previously worked unfolded and manifested itself more clearly under new angles of vision. Vulnerability, unreliability of our physicality, like the entire material world, has become part of the new reality.

The key concepts of the concept of this year's residence: home, body, I am considering now in new variable scales. They are material shells as carriers of memory, contours that contain it. The concept of home was transformed at the same time to the micro-scale of an anxious suitcase and to the macro-view of the world as your home. The history of Palazzo Corpi demonstrates how the concept of home was transformed within its physical boundaries: from a personal estate, to a house representing the state, and in the end - a center of like-minded people, a home as a place of shared spirit and ideals. All our lives we go to the home, the one we will create ourselves. And we are not talking about its material shell, but the container of an intangible common denominator, a common memory.

The installation presented as part of the residency recreates the ceilings of Palazzo Corpi, the ceilings under which everyone gathers together. The paper prints that make them up were taken from the surfaces in the premises of Soho House, as well as from objects found in Istanbul, in places that were suggested to me by members of a closed club of art connoisseurs. Each print is a reproduction of the shape of the surface itself, the shell of the object, but also a carrier of memory, the memory of each participant about this place. Prints are made by the method of blind embossing, the only sources of paper color are traces left on the surface by man and time. Among the elements are prints taken from the surfaces of my house in Ukraine, those that were placed in a small suitcase that carry the memory of it.
